Perhaps you might want to make an official rule to the F.A.Geek about labelling things NSFW if they are NSFW (I will remember to do so in the future). |

Also for geekish acronyms, there's this, tho I fear I may just be endangering our newbies by infecting them with the stupid ones on the list. |

I find it interesting that the list of acronyms has a lot of ones from before the internet was widely used... SNAFU, and FUBAR were armed forces terms, I believe, and my dad used them all the time. And other things, FAQ, FYI, PTB, etc. |

Well, the US military designed the basis for the internet, so it kinda makes sense. Wasn't it ARPnet from the Navy? Help me out you networking guys... I know "Ping" is what submariners call using sonar on an object, or a netadmin uses to find an IP address. |

While several of us could attempt to answer this, John is by far the best one to answer any such questions. John? Help? |

I like the one about parents not needing to take responsibility for their children's actions anymore. |

Waking up ... Huh?
Ping was developed by a fellow down at the Army Research Lab in Aberdeen by the name of Michael Muuss (recently deceased, by the way). Yes, I believe that the sonar effect was the reason behind its name, but the official line is that it is an ETLA for Packet INternet Groper.
Mike was a great guy, lots of fun to talk to. More info on his career at http://ftp.arl.army.mil/~mike/.
Unfortunately, a lot of the Internet pioneers are passing away in their early years.
