Correct, the hebrew word 'sheol' meaning the grave or death (Hadees in Greek) is always translated as hell, pit, or grave depending on the location, convenience, bias, etc. Your Bible May Vary.

"she-ul" means cough.
"she-el" is step.
"she-al" is question
don't know "she-ol"

"kever" is grave
"bor" is pit

and that's your hebrew lesson for the day Very Happy

It seems to me that Hell is more of a New Testament term. It is that which describes eternal separation from God in death. Jesus explained this separation as eternal torture in many different ways to get the point accross that you want to be with God in the afterlife.

Slightly on topic: Do Jews still belive in the resurrection of the dead?

I thought they were golums or whatnot. Wasn't there an X-Files episode regarding a really devout Jewish family who resurrected some creature to kill some skinheads or somethin?

As with all things Jewish, it depends on who you ask. Generally speaking Jews believe that when you die you go to the state of death where you can't feel/see/hear anything and wait around for the Messiah to show up, resurrect you and usher in the Messianic Age.

The more mystical among the Jews believe in something a little stranger where as you go about your life you can gain or lose a sort of spiritual currency in each life for being good or bad. When you've worked off all of your spiritual debt you get to hang out and wait and be groovy. Or something like that. Again, Your Bible may vary, but kabbalah is some really neat stuff to study.

as bri said, depends on who you ask. i go with the slightly more mystical view (the lubavich jews who study kabbalah believe the same). in the simplest terms i believe in reincarnaiton. if you want the longer version ed, PM me. more secular jews believe in the messianic age.

back on topic....

finished da vinci code. liked angels and demons better. i prob would ahve liked da vinci code more if i had not read it just after angels and demons.

saw the movie last night. it was pretty good. some things i really liked in the book they left out. some things in the movie were not in the book and i thought were a bit silly. but it wasn't bad.

oooh! i am excited! other than the Lourve, i think that A&D would be a much more visually stunning piece as a movie. i also found the book to be faster paced and far more gripping than Da Vinci Code.
