So I have a question... if the theory goes that people can't cross the street with earphones because they are distracted and can't hear cars coming, then should we also ban deaf people from carrying newspapers or other literature while walking down the street? Or should we just ban deaf people? Argh. Stupid government.

They aren't going to pass this bill into law people. It's 1 crazy lawmaker, and 1 bored journalist with nothing better to write about.

It only takes 1 lawmaker to introduce a stupid bill, but it takes a whole bunch of them to make it a law... and this one will NEVER find the support. so calm down, this shouldn't even be a news story.

so...then you don't believe in governments?

are you sure you didn't mean this

"Government has an obligation to protect its citizenry from themselves"

If the government keeps dumbing down the system with entitlements, common sense becomes not so common, so the same government that gives away money for breathing and breeding must protect the stupid people that it creates. I'm all for helping people who are down on their luck, but would rather "teach a man to fish" and feed him for life rather than give him a fish and let him eat for a day. Otherwise, it seems that we keep treating the symptoms of the evils of society rather than actually fix the root of the problem.

Example: Raising minimum wage.
Increases the relative wage of the lower working class to the upper classes.
The result:
Wages settle back into their previous proportions, inflation rises as the consumer price indexes rise, and people start talking about raising the minimum wage again. We get the stories from previous generations that talk about "back in my day, a loaf of bread only cost x."
The real problem:
People are so unskilled that they work jobs where they are only worth per hour as much as a teenager.
The real solution:
Make sure opportunities exist for upward mobility within our society. Teach students in High School who are not college bound skills they can use in the modern labor force through apprenticeships.

that wasn't the point I was trying to make nor did I think it was brian's but thank you for playing

The point I was trying to make is that it is first job of the government to protect its citizenry. That's why we have an army and a police force. If someone wants to walk in the middle of a street without looking to see if they are going to get killed first because they really like the song they are listening to or they are really into their conversation on the phone let them die.

I honestly don't believe that government should even be obligated to protect its citizenry. From themselves or others. Or, at least, not in all cases. In order to have a cohesive national identity and forward moving society, certain societal elements have to be allowed to remove themselves, or in some cases, be forced to moved or changed.

Unfortunately, national identity and union are now hate words in the eyes of half the country.

Government's job is to provide national security, not individual security.

Brian, even if you don't feel cops and firemen are necessary, I say they're really good to have around. Like when I got robbed at gunpoint? I like how that guy is in jail now.

Fine, governments aren't obligated to protect ALL of its citizenry.

Also, I don't believe those statements contradict. A government's job is continue the life of the nation and the society that it governs. That does not necessarily mean that it has to protect every single individual citizen in it, not even a majority, really. Just enough to keep the nation moving along. I mean, honestly, have you driven through New Jersey lately? Ugh.

This nation was originally founded upon the tenets of freedom, our national identity was freedom. That identity is being eroded away by crazies on all sides. Government should protect the people that still believe in those ideals from idiots and let Darwin sort the rest out.

BTW, I'm being mostly satirical here...mostly.

So, you feel that everyone should be as progressive as you are in order to co-exist with you?

they tried that aryan thing a while back...didn't turn out quite the happy way it was envisioned. Some bad fruit grew the vine in a wrong direction.

U.S. tenets as per declaration of independence: natural law, self-determination, deism with liberties and rights. Policemen and firemen are performing the civic duties that all of us should realize in this american republic, to serve and to protect.

our current government protects via statutory laws and maintaining of the laws. citizens try their hardest to find loopholes in order to exploit situations to their advantage. Exploitation of the system does not support the moral or legal right, self-determination. Neither does corruption support republicanism. It is a shame that our government now bends-the-knee to lobbyists and the almighty dollar. This behaviour is not the original intent of law dictated by reason and logic, unless you're conniving to use reason to line your pockets with more money.

and, I have to ask, how do you maintain a national identity if you don't protect your "nation" from outside threats? I am not only referring to military, but external economic, cultural, and philosophical influences.
