If I installed and configured an actual community site for techhouse using something like ELGG would people be interested? It would essentially be a mini Facebook but only for people we allow. We'd be able to do event planning and photo albums and blogs and more features like that, all exclusive to our group. The software out there for it is pretty sophisticated now and free. Can't beat that. There'd still be an area like these forums, but they'd be slightly different. |

Sounds cool to me. Would Elgg be able to email me when there is activity on the website? That way if it's asleep a few days and then there's activity, I could know to come by. Just wondering. Regardless, sounds like a fun idea, I say go for it. |

Elgg appears to have individual user settings for how much e-mail for activity you want. The problem is that Elgg requires a PHP library for JSON that isn't part of HMS's cheap hosting solution. I'd have to go to a virtual private server for $35/month or something like that to get the libraries I need (or so their tech says). So maybe not Elgg, but something like it. There's social engine, which may work in my current environment, but I'd have to pay a good chunk of money for the software. |

Yeah, I could do a private group, but then we really only get one discussion thread, and we'd have to post links to events and photo galleries and things. |
