With this forum, I don't have time for others. Kinda like a really demanding female... Lots of bitchyness and not enough sex in return.

It is ingrained into our heads that you get what you pay for. Plus, the consumeristic nature of our culture comes into play. Most consumers don't want to spend a lot of time getting something to work, they just want it to work. Ex: there are some people who like to work on cars, but all car drivers don't like to work on cars. Thus cars have become increasingly easier to use by the average American and allow more people to buy one.

Actually, I think the best way to illustrate Ed's point is cereal. Yes, cereal. Those "bargain brand" cereals in the bag which cost significantly less than "real" cereals ... we're talking like 25% - 33% less here. They taste just the same too. Brontosaurus Blasts fucking rule, let me tell you. But if you buy these things, people at your house will actually laugh at you for buying the inferior cereal ... never having tried what you just bought. WITHOUT EVEN TRYING IT. It's as if this concept of a name brand being the only acceptable choice had been ingrained into their heads, and anyone who would deviate from those products is obviously getting something inferior.

Does this mean that we should start thinking of Linux as the bag cereal of the OS world?

Good point Uty, however there's the other side of it as well. There's a steep learning curve associated with Linux that the average desktop computer buyer is not willing to learn. When a user buys something, he is willing to do some setup, like give his name, but that's about the extent of his envolvement. Users are willing to pay more for systems that are the easiest to use.

A different variable comes into play with Corporate environments. Manager's would rather their people have the easiest interface to use to maximize productivity. Even though the cost of the OS is a major factor, a company will incur training costs associated with the new Linux OS.

The solution, for all you desktop Linux guys out there. Make a distribution of Linux that the average Joe can use.
Requirements:
1. A complete GUI interface, don't show the user a black screen with a prompt.
2. X windows automatically boots up.
3. Disable the [ALT]+[F?] to toggle to a different screen (but have a setting to let a user enable it).
4. Write "GUI Wizards" to guide the user through the setup of new equiptment, software patches, and features (such as networking).
5. Free card games, old people (and some young ones) like playing card games on their computers.
6. A GUI Wizard to find and kill a process.
7. The development of a RAD (rapid application development) language for Linux, perhaps based off of current Business Basics, to allow for competition with .NET.

Goes along with what Ed said, but it's not just a learning curve. Windows also has a learning curve, but the majority of people have at least minimal working experience with Windows. At school, we had Windows 3.x until my senior year of HS (1998). Drop a kid in front of a Linux OS at an early age, and it will become just as easy as Windows.

Yeah, but what the rich kids don't know is that the lunch the poor kids are eating is waaay better.

Ed, so far as your last post, a majority of those points on your list have been met by various desktop environments Linux has to offer. Notice how I said "various" -- meaning if you don't like one you can very easily choose another. The OS isn't entirely "ok, now type some more stuff into the prompt now" anymore. I'd suggest looking around redhat.com (or maybe it's .org) for more information.

Indeed RedHat9 has the option to automagically boot to Gnome so that users never even have to know what all that "text" magic stuff does. There is a learning curve of getting used to Gnome, but starting from zero rather than from already knowing windows I doubt Gnome is really harder to use than windows.

(KDE is way cooler than Gnome.)
