I knew this girl growing up who was allowed to watch MASH, which chronicled the lives of soldiers DURING THE VIETNAM WAR, but was not allowed to watch The Simpsons because the sometimes said "damn" and "hell." |

the thing is, her parents grew up around that stuff and it's sometimes seen as being a part of life that one needs to learn about and learn to accept.
remember, there are generation differences here. |

yes and i for one think that TV is a fantastic way for kids to learn about the important things in life |

her parents probably thought that MASH gave a perspective on their generation, and used it to bridge the generation gap. The Simpson's is a satirical comentary on modern America. There's some people out there who don't like the show (mainly from the MASH generation). |

I agree. MTV, for instance, has a show called 'The Real World', which chronicles the events of real people in real life situations. This is a ground-breaking show and makes an excellent case study of the interaction of normal people in day-to-day activities. I highly suggest that everyone buy the season on DVD and Betamax. |
