I used to be impressed with Dell Support. They took care of problems quickly and they were able to diagnose hardware problems quickly and logically over the phone. Since the tech support has been moved to India, everything has now been canned and if you want logic you have to go two levels up and talk to an Irishman. So to recap, if you want Dell's intelligent diagnosis of the past, ask to speak to the supervisor, then their supervisor.

That is all Rolling Eyes

went through this a month or so ago with my hard drive frying itself on me... i was very close to killing someone after it took 6 hours on the phone with them to figure out that my hard drive was fucked... simple solution: send me a new hard drive... they didn't send it out for two weeks after they decided that was the only option...

but i don't know what i would have done if my warranty had run out... perhaps this:

You would have gotten an HP and not had problems.

Perhaps it is time to switch to IBM Thinkpads.

On one hand no one has EVER (in the history of the world) accused the Irish of being logical, but on the other hand it's nice to hear that my ancestral countrymen are saving the sanity of many a hindered geek.

I love being of Irish descent Very Happy

As for Indian support: It sucks. I used to tell everyone I knew to buy a Dell, but after struggling with Tech Support for DAYS, I now tell everyone to buy eMachines from Best Buy. Here's logic for you: If your main base of customers are from the United States and speak English as a first language, let's throw our Tech Support to a call center in a foreign country where they know 15 sentences of English.

Bah. I hate Dell Tech Support.

Yeah, I have a Dell and the tech support girl was reading instructions off a screen to me- and not doing a very good job, so I was TEACHING HER HOW TO READ over the phone. I finally asked to speak to someone fluent and got nowhere. So I called registered a complaint and eventually they fixed the problem for me.

Unfortunately I remember the days of great Dell Support

Amazing, all this came about because my first on site tech was a dumbass. The second one came out (loaded for bear) with a million parts. He replaced the motherboard with no problems (the first tech couldn't get the case off) and it all works again. Amazing.
