finished it at 3am last night (i have a problem putting books down). i thoroughly enjoyed it. because i know rome and renaissance art well i knew some of the anwsers before the character did. i have been to rome and it was awesome to see the city come alive in such detail in a way i never saw it before. enjoyed it a lot. i am gonna read da vinci code now. figure i'll have that done pretty quickly since i read 400 pages yesterday.

Actually Angels & Demons was a much better story that The DaVinci Code in my opinion. While there are tremendous similarities, I think the former gave more of an "in-road" into papacy and the election process than the latter.

Unfortuntely writers tend to get in creative ruts where every book is a variation of the group; just read any of Dean Koontz' books for a shining example of this.

I read it last year, when I still had time to read. Rolling Eyes I remember it being quite a page turner, though.

That is great! It shows just how insane the Gnostic ideas in the Da Vinci Code really are.

I have to disagree with bjciii here: while both stories were interesting for the first 2/3 and then became absolute crapfests as Brown muddled his way into a heart attack of closure and hackneyed conflict resolution, the sheer number of ridiculously stupid things that happened at the end of Angels & Demons make it a far worse novel than Da Vinci Code. And since the papacy and its election had nothing to do with the plot of Da Vinci Code, it's not surprising that it didn't talk much about it.

I find it wonderous how works of fiction with enough historical events sprinkled in can take the world by storm.

Its like watching propaganda take hold with less money and effort. In fact, the windfall makes it appealing for anyone to try a hand at it. Are there government storybooks other than children's books that already prove my query here? Examples would be great.

E, if you want to read on the insights of da vinci, don't read fiction, learn french and study his texts that are stored at the sorbonne and various other universities in france. The Italians may preach that da vinci is their prodigy, but he was so far beyond them and the church, he had to flee the country due to their fear of him.

Well I never read it but I'm told the modern notion of hell comes from Dante's Inferno.

i already know about da vinci and enjoy his works, that's why i am interested in this book to see how that incorporate them.

i am already on page 100. i have a ton of stuff to do between now and tuesday (when i am supposed to see the movie) so hopefully i can get the book done.

Correct. There's also a lot of research into the various mistranslations of greek and hebrew words into 'hell.' Of course, there's the wikipedia entry, but also this interesting paper and a simplified discussion in Jeff Priddy's Idle Babbler.

i would think the hebrew words would be mistranslations considering judaism does not believe in a hell.
