Anyone have thoughts about it? Is DoKs planning any kind of event when it's released?

I'm curious if maybe we want to try a one-off get together to see what's changed in the new Edition.

I've been snagging 2nd edition Ravenloft stuff from drivethrurpg.com, so I got a kick out of Rob's reply.

4th edition is relevant to my interests - I like their design philosophy of making every level exciting. The mathematics of 3rd edition make levels 8-14 the most fun and challenging. I hope they can extend that through all thirty levels.

I don't know if DoKs is planning anything though I do plan on picking this stuff up and giving it a whirl. I'm running a V:tR TT right now so someone else will have to DM.

I'm listening to the YouTube publicity vids thrown out by Wizards. I'm not expecting any concrete info; more just propaganda, but any information is good.

By the way, if you want a very cool podcast, check out the DnD Podcast that Wizards has. More specifically, the one where they interview R.A. Salvatore is pretty compelling. It's on both iTunes and here: http://tinyurl.com/24rb8f (that's the Salvatore interview: Podcast #6)

At the very least, I'll probably take a look at the PHB when it drops in May (and the low level adventure that should come out with it). If I don't pick them up, I'm planning to show up at Worldwide DnD Day to try it out.

Any thoughts about finally getting a group together for GenCon?

GenCon is in Philly, isn't it? That could be fun as long as it's on a weekend.

umm... I'm pretty sure that gen con is far far away, in Indianapolis Indiana. Ok maybe not far far away, but pretty far.

Probably thinking of WizardCon, I think that's the philly comic book convention. Something like that.

This is the middle of a presentation on YouTube. Shows some of the online enhancements of the game. Of note: DnD Insider is completely free.

Goddamnit. I'm getting "the itch" for DnD again. Why does my travel schedule suck balls so badly?

If it weren't for work travel, I'd probably be doing more DnD and less WoW.

/sigh

Heh. This seems to happen to me about every 6 mos or so. I go to the Wizards site, poke around, and get excited. (or, in this case, listen to the podcast archive) Then I realize I can't play until things change with my work schedule, and I get a combination of frustration and depression.

I'm going to look at my schedule this summer, though. Anyone interested in at least taking a shot at 4e to see how things work?

Wizards release schedule:
PHB + first module (from what I understand): May 2008
MM: June 2008
DMG: July 2008

I have no idea why they are staggering like that. If they released a "starter box" of PHB, DMG, adventure (and the reference books singularly); it seems to make more sense. Then it's just "pick up and go."

I can only assume the module has absolutely all the info that you'd need to run it without the other reference books.

-----------
I digress: If people are interested, I'll start doing the legwork about getting something together. Plus, you guys can meet my puppy!

GenCon is indeed in Indianapolis, and Origins is in Columbus, Ohio. They're about 1 month from each other, Origins around the 4th of July, GenCon at the beginning of August.

I can't believe I know that..... I suppose dating a dork will do that to ya.

Quick update: They are releasing the three Core books together in June; but are releasing the first 4e adventure in May.

Wizards is also selling(!) "4th Edition Preview" books for ~$20 each. Proof they are over-merchandising the game, yet again. If you can take the 4e forums on WotC as any kind of barometer, they seem to be completely turning the game on its ear, with both good and bad results.

Classes / creatures are now based on their type and/or contribution to a fight (e.g. tank types, strikers, ranged, etc). Word is they are also moving toward a Lineage 2 style model for class specialization; where early changes are minor, but you can specialize more as you take levels. (for example, fighters choose dual wielding or sword-and-board at first level)

Oh, I don't really blame them. Nerds will eat up all kinds of lame crap. (Geeks only eat up cool crap, which is why I need to get Exalted Deeds / Vile Darkness before they're out of print)

Check Ebay on/around May. It'll be flooded with them.

Quick update:

http://www.enworld.org has a consolidated list of updates regarding 4e. They've been organized according to announcement dates.
