I called maybe three people since I got the damn like yet apparently, I need to take surveys and go on vacations that I didn't know about. CURSE YOU!!!! In fact the first call I got was from a freaking telemarketing company.

You don't know how bad it is. I unwittingly became part of an apparent social trend in l33t people our age to use a cell phone for everything. I have no landline. Without DSL, I don't need one.

So guess how telemarketers contact me?

Okay that is how I lived for about 4 years. Now when I moved down here I couldn't do that anymore due to the fact that I can't get reception for shit in my apartment. Plus when you are doing 4 hour conference calls to europe on a weekly basis... that gets really expensive on a cell phone. In any case that's the reason I picked up a land line. I would have gone with vonage but I am doing too much computer stuff at one time to be able to dedicate the bandwidth to it.

If only you could afford a T3, right? That would rule. Then you could be the bell of the ball.

um you all know there is a do not call list in DE right? Plus if it's not costing you money (i.e. on a cell phone) you should fuck with them because it IS costing them money. Talk to them for hours and then don't buy whatever it is they were selling or talk nonsense or ask them personal questions.

IIRC, there's a national do-not-call registry. You can also tell the telemarketers to take you off of their calling list; if they call you afterwards, you can get the FCC to fine them.

I don't do either, though, since I have caller id and I think it'd be pretty hypocritical of me to do so, anyway.

The Junkbusters Anti-Telemarketing Script wrote:

http://www.junkbusters.com/ht/en/script.html

Every time you get a call you consider junk, just ask the questions in this script. If they answer no, you may be able to sue them. You can print copies of it to keep by every phone at home. If everyone follows it, the junk calls will slowly but surely drop off.

``Are you calling to sell something?'' (or "is this a telemarketing call?'')
``Could you tell me your full name please?'' $
``And a phone number, area code first?'' $
``What's the name of the organization you're calling for?'' $
``Does that organization keep a list of numbers it's been asked not to call?'' $
``I would like my number(s) put on that list. Can you take care of that now?'' $
``And does the company you work for also make telemarketing calls for any other organizations?'' (If they answer no, skip the next question.)
(If yes) ``Can you make sure your company won't call me for any other organization?'' $

You may need to ask to speak with a supervisor if they sound lost. When you're ready to let them off, you might close with ``Is it clear that I never want telemarketing calls from anyone?'' and just say goodbye. If you feel like making them pay, keep going:

``Will your company keep my number on its do-not-call list for at least ten years?'' $
``And does your company have a written policy that says that on paper?'' $
``Can you send me a copy of it?'' $
``What's your supervisor's first and last name?''
``What's your employer's business name, address and main telephone number?''
``Are you calling for a tax-exempt nonprofit organization?''
``Is this call based on a previously established business relationship?''

Before hanging up, check you have all their answers written down, then say goodbye. Add the date and time to your record. (Is it between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.? $)

Disclaimer: nothing here should be taken as legal advice. If they answer no to any question ending in ``$'' you may be able to sue them for $500-$1500 under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. But if the answer to either of the last two questions is yes, then the Act doesn't consider the call to be a solicitation, so it's not covered by many of its regulations.

That's pretty cool! Anyone ever thought of making that into a program to track that info?

I just don't know about this government sponsored 'do not call list.' I don't know about government sponsored anything these days.

There's one thing I know about government no matter which party is in power: They all throw tax-payer money back to their congressional districts or states as bribes for their next election bid.
