Summer of Socks 2007
The “Summer of Socks” project begins at 0500 on June 21, and I had a project picked out, sport weight yarn from Lorna’s Laces. I planned to use a simple pattern, I like them the best.
Then, yesterday, I talked to an old friend. We worked together as young girls, single girls both of us, pulling shiftwork on a switchboard. After all these 30+ years, I still think of her by her maiden name, the way I first knew her! And she’s coping now with breast cancer.
So those sock plans can wait until later in the project, or next fall, or whenever I get around to them. The first socks will be this color.

Per the Lorna’s Laces website, “20% of all proceeds on this color in Shepherd Sock yarn are donated to breast cancer research.” I knew I had it here somewhere, and dug it out of my stash, then I borrowed daughter’s swift and winder to get it ready for knitting. It seems fitting that I do this one first. Maybe we all should buy this color and knit.
Thoughts and prayers go out to my friend, with every stitch.
